Shaftsbury Resonator
Upgrade Project

The original resonator of this guitar was an unusual aluminium resonator that appeared to be a hybrid cross between the type of cone used in spider bridge resonators and the type of cone used in a biscuit bridge resonator. It was something like an aluminium soup plate that rose up to accept the biscuit bridge in the middle. In "Chickenbone" John Wormald's own words "enormously thick...like a hubcap from a Vauxhall Velox!!"

The interior construction was also unusual in that there was no soundwell. The resonator cone hung from the front of the guitar and was held in place by the cover plate that was in turn screwed to the guitar. Beneath the face of the guitar there were a series of wooden blocks glued in place to accept the fixing screws.
